Can you Knit? - Knit for Africa with the SK Knitting Group.
In February a group of enthusiastic knitters got together and decided to knit squares to make into blankets to send to Africa. We met a first time in the hall to get started and since then we have been madly knitting squares at home as a blanket takes a considerable number of squares!
The finished blanket will be given to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund which works throughout S. Africa and liaises with groups in Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia helping orphans and vulnerable children. We hope to have it finished for Mandela Day - Nelson Mandela's birthday, the 18th July. In fact it should be ready by the end of May in order to arrive on time.
So we are sending out an SOS! If you like to knit, and have some time, please help us to finish our blanket by knitting squares at home and handing them in to the Church. Squares should be in double knitting wool (or the equivalent) in bright colours, and should measure 20cm x 20cm (8" x 8"). The easiest pattern is to cast on approximately 38 stitches (this depends on your knitting tension and can vary) with size 6 cm needles and knit every row till it measures 20cm or 8 inches then cast off. Squares can be plain, striped, multi-coloured or knitted in a variety of different stitches or patterns.
We have chosen to knit but perhaps you prefer to crochet, don't be put off, we will accept crocheted squares with pleasure!
Our next meeting in the Church will be on Saturday 5th March from 10am till 2pm, come along and knit or drop off your finished squares then. All are welcome.
